The point of souvenirs is having something to remember that time you travelled to whatever place. Nobody travels in order to buy souvenirs, because then it wouldn’t be a souvenir. If you’re a collector of something typically found in souvenir shops, you can import it, but it won’t be a souvenir to you.
What are you calling a souvenir? Do you even know what the word souvenir means?
The point of traveling is the experience not the souvenirs. The souvenirs are there for evoking the memory, or to bring back to friends.
If you just want the country knick knacks then yeah it’s probably better to buy online, but in my experience it’s not why anyone who collects souvenirs or trinkets does it

It’s not a souvenir if you haven’t been there, it comes from the French for “memory”, by definition you can’t stay at home and buy a souvenir.

Talking as a forgetful person, I have purchased souvenirs online because I forgot to buy them while travelling, but really the point of a souvenir is, as the name suggests, to have a memory of having been ‘there’. If you buy a souvenir online for a place you’ve not been to, it’s a bit pointless.
