• From the email:

    Hi Arnd and SoC folks,

New SoC platform, in the future this will be handled by Peter Griffin.

    Best regards,
    Krzysztof

Either a joke I don’t get, or very unfortunate name collision for that guy.

  • Well, basic support.

Stuff like UART and booting up.

This does not mean screen, touch, modem, wifi, USB and so on work.

      • Well, if you want a step forward in getting a phone woth mainline kernel support, look at Fairphone. They at least pay someone on their staff to work on mainlining.

Not like Google, that just throws a small piece of a device tree over the fence and lets the community do all the hard work.

Also, Fairphones are repairable phones while those from Google aren’t made for repairs.

Absolutely agree. Unfortunately, Fairphone specs last I looked were a bit behind everyone else.

On the plus side though, there is also Motorola, who plan to release GrapheneOS phones. Really looking forward to that actually (hopefully they run all the standard apps)

I think at least in EU, that laws might eventually force phones to be more repairable too.

          • I don’t mind lagging a bit behind the newest specs, I just want something that lasts for longer. It’s also bad for the planet. That’s more important to me than the next shiny thing.

Yeah. I do lots of hiking. So I want satellite phone capabilities mainly, but also need battery efficiency

              Most people are fine otherwise

The newer pixels support communication as a sat phone too, but you need a provider that supports it. Here in Australia, that’s Telstra. Not sure about other countries.

But basically ensures there is no offgrid. For most people though, that is useless
