Nillumbik Shire Council in Melbourne’s outer north-east says it is “devastated” and has launched an investigation into the incident, which occurred during rabbit-control works carried out across at least 30 local reserves from June to August.

But for the volunteers who had spent months treating local wombats for the potentially deadly skin condition, mange, the council’s response has done little to ease concerns about the fate of animals they can no longer find.
